Well what an interesting a fun site this is! I enjoy writing and have now found a home on the Internet. Helium.com is a hub rife with everything the English language can offer.
Using a cunning but successful formula, the website instigates writers into submitting articles, poems, and prose in response to discussion titles. The idea behind this is as Helium.com states "We are a vast resource of experience-based knowledge, wisdom and creativity". The method to get writers to submit their wisdom is the Internet's favourite tool, money.
To earn money with the website is a matter of success as a writer. Primarily the articles you submit are ranked by your peers on a relatively fair basis. Upon submitting your own article, you are invited to rate someone else’s. This is done by showing you two articles on the same topic. You are then expected to read the two of them and decide which is better. The scale which determines the level of difference between the two is a little ambiguous. "Slightly More", "More" and "By far". In this way you weigh up the two articles you have read and determine which is better and by how much.
The placement of the article will then be placed in the relevant position (determined by the rating score by you and many others). Should the article be placed first or towards the top, there is a greater chance of it having a page view and as such, so will the adverts placed on the page by Helium.com. The more page views, the more money you earn because the more money Helium earns. It is as simple as that. Naturally this is not a reliable method to funding a lifestyle of rich food, yachts and rare wine! There is another way.
Helium.com has a marketplace. This is the better method of earning from your writing. Website owners, newspapers and many other industries place an advert describing what they want written about, how long it should be and what they will pay for such an article. You are invited to then write, along with others, and submit. If your article is what the client requires they will select you as the "winner" and subsequently pay you for your effort. The prices vary, but vary in a sensible way. The longer an article is, requiring more research and effort, the more you will be paid. Likewise an article which would take you an hour may only pay USD$20 or GBP£10. Remember, you will only earn this money if your article is selected.
As you can see Helium.com is not really a website where you can easily earn a living. It should be taken as an excellent site to enhance your skills and develop your ability. If you are interested in literature or writing in general, you will get far more from the site than just money. The variety of ideas and opinions is without doubt brilliant and you can spend hours just reading other people's work.
So how would I rate Helium.com?
"By far"

Summary: A brilliant website if you enjoy writing. A brilliant website if you enjoy reading. A great resource if you prefer to cheat in your homework essays!
Virtually Writing Score: 90/100
